Stephen (Steve) Mar-Pohl is the founding Principal and President of InSite Consulting Architects. An award-winning architect, Steve has been actively practicing since 1988 and has cultivated a diverse career with a specialized focus on technically complex historic preservation projects.
Steve’s approach begins with a deep commitment to understanding the unique qualities of each historic asset. He employs an immersive methodology that integrates cultural and interpretive context with a thorough evaluation of the physical conditions found onsite. By carefully studying the existing fabric of a structure and the broader character of its setting, he identifies what is necessary for its meaningful and sustainable preservation.
In addition to his design expertise, Steve is highly experienced in navigating the regulatory landscape that governs preservation projects. He has successfully managed compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and regularly coordinates with State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), National Park Service (NPS), and other federal and local review bodies. Steve also provides strategic guidance on leveraging historic tax credits, assisting clients in securing funding through both state and federal programs to support the revitalization of historic properties.
This combination of technical knowledge, cultural sensitivity, and regulatory acumen enables Steve to lead preservation efforts that are both architecturally sound and publicly responsible.
When Steve is not working on architectural solutions, he can be found cooking up solutions in the kitchen as a talented chef at home.
