University of Wisconsin - Madison, Armory & Gymnasium (Red Gym) Exterior Envelope Repair & Replacement

Project Background

The UW-Madison Armory and Gymnasium (commonly known as the “Red Gym”) was built in 1894 by Conover & Porter. This building has undergone numerous remodeling and repair projects that have resulted in some good and some not-so-good results to the exterior envelope. The project provided investigative research and evaluations to identify deficiencies, develop design solutions, and recommend appropriate corrective measures, all within the defined budget.

Scope

InSite conducted an intensive envelope evaluation to determine areas of masonry repair, repointing, and roof replacement. With the extreme height and site constraints, repairs were prioritized through the lens of scaffolding access, a huge cost implication to the repairs. A pre-design report, full design services, and enhanced construction administration are being provided for this project.

Solution

The final project will provide a new slate roof replacement where it once historically occurred at the steep slope roofs.

Replacement skylights will be provided at their historic locations.

The towers and turrets will have new roof replacements of more durable modified bitumen and PMMA flashings. The crenel caps will be replaced in a galvanized metal to replicate their historic appearance. The ongoing evaluations of the masonry and repointing are occurring to provide the best value and prioritization of the budget.
